About Grace

Grace Yan-yan Mak (麥欣恩) is an accomplished film scholar, screenwriter, and film producer whose career spans multiple continents and disciplines. Born and raised in Hong Kong, she relocated to the United States in 2023. Grace holds a Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore and has taught at several renowned universities, including the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul (Korea).

 

Before embarking on her academic journey, Grace worked closely with the acclaimed Hong Kong director Tsui Hark, contributing as a scriptwriter and a member of his creative team. Her screenplay Three Narrow Gates (《三條窄路》), directed by Vincent Chui, was featured as the closing film at the Hong Kong Asian Independent Film Festival in 2008. Additionally, her script project Shuffle won the Technicolor Thailand Awards at the 6th Hong Kong – Asia Financing Film Forum. Her co-written film Doomsday Party (《末日派對》/《命運派對》), directed by Ho Hong, received the Top HAF Award at FILMART and was showcased in the NETPAC Competition Section at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival. Grace’s other script projects have been selected for the Shanghai Filmmart and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Film Production Investment and Trade Fair, and her screenplay Free earned a Film Development Grant from the Singapore Film Commission. Since 2015, Grace has contributed as a film producer to three feature films: Battlebox, Hong Kong 1942, and Christmas at the Royal Hotel, all historical drama movies set in Hong Kong during World War II.

 

Grace’s academic contributions include two published books: Hong Kong Cinema and Singapore: A Cultural Ring between Two Cities (1950-65) (《香港電影與新加坡:冷戰時代星港文化連繫(1950-1965)》) and From Pulp Fiction, Hollywood to MP&GI (Cathay): Adaptations and Remakes in Hong Kong Cinema during the Cold War Era (《冷戰時期香港電懋電影的「另類改編」與「重拍」》). Her scholarly work encompasses twelve peer-reviewed journal articles and thirteen book chapters. She also writes journalistic pieces. Beyond her academic and film work, she is a published novelist and short story writer with contributions to various literary magazines and anthologies in Hong Kong. Grace has been a member of the Hong Kong Film Critics’ Society since 2005 and a member of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) since 2007, further establishing her reputation as a critical voice in the film industry.
